Bagby Street Hoopla

Posted on | June 22, 2012 | 6 Comments

It was just Wednesday when we posted our tip about the Bagby Street reconstruction… and it quickly snowballed into something the mainstream media eventually picked up. We wanted to thank all you InnerLoopeder’s for your energy, but it’s still not over. Public Works is still pushing for three lanes, Midtown is fighting it, and judging from most of your comments… you’re ready to fight for pedestrians as well.

While we are pleased to see this story make it all the way to KHOU 11 News, we wanted to clarify a couple points their report got completely wrong (what a surprise).

1. Midtown wants two lanes of traffic… it’s Public Works wanting three.
2. As our reader Dan Barnum points out: Midtown Redevelopment/TIRZ and Midtown Management District both tell me that they are fighting this and that it goes against plans approved months ago. Years ago when Midtown Redevelopment was just getting started, we worked with TxDOT to stop this kind of express street on both Bagby and Brazos. The extra capacity is not needed now nor will it be in the future.

I know a lot of you are upset about the three lanes. Our suggestion is to keep raising your voices to the City. Our Mayor and Council respond when the public speaks, you just have to speak loudly. Let them know you want two lanes of traffic, Midtown’s approved ORIGINAL plans, and that you support a pedestrian oriented (not car focused) Midtown.

Thanks for breaking the story. Hopefully residents voices will be heard over those who want 3 lanes. Who benefits from 3 lanes anyway? Bagby has always moved fast in the first place.

We’ve just put together an online petition to try and keep our charming Midtown the locale we all love.

Here is a response I received from the mayor. It was very cool of her to respond. She did not address the rumors about turning Bagby into a 3 lane road. But at least, it looks like the original plans are still on the table:

    Dear Ryan:
Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the Bagby Street reconstruction project with
me. The project has not been stopped, and no permits have been withdrawn. The project
engineer is responding to questions from the Public Works and Engineering Department, but
the project has not been halted. It is continuing.

    Sincerely,
    Annise D. Parker
    Mayor

We made that last one up, but sometimes the questions really are the illogicals
chasing after the unanswerables. We then add a
bit of our high-grown Guatemala A’achimbal to round out some brightness and floral notes.
I’m not in a position to give a scholarly answer to that.
