Midtown Superblock First Look

Posted on | March 8, 2012 | 8 Comments

It’s been talked about for years, but the huge (currently empty) “SuperBlock” in the middle of Midtown is about to come alive. InnerLooped has just obtained a brand-new rendering showing how Midtown plans to create a “Superblock park”. Specifically, the park will have 140 underground parking spaces, as well as 7,000 square feet of new restaurant and retail space. The rendering also shows a water feature/splash area type thing, and appears to be from the McGowen@Main corner looking towards Camden Travis. Even more interesting… poking through the trees appears to be a new apartment building looking down upon the park. We were told that you can expect this awesomeness Spring 2014.

You can download the document itself here. The document also contains a rendering of the new Bagby Street reconstruction and the new water gardens along it.

Thats awesome. I wonder if the apartments are from Camden. I coulda sworn I read recently they were building mixed use apartments on the superblock….

@dom, considering one of the two items on the document have just started (Bagby), and that this is coming from Midtown themselves… we’ll just say we are feeling pretty good about it.

Nice! The area could become the “Central Park” of Houston. I’m curious if it will stretch all the way down to Anita St.

I have been expecting a high rise apartment building with shopping at the ground level for a while. I think this is amazing!!! Way better than what I expected! The construction on Babgy appears to be going well. (Do those guys ever take a break?) Wow, I am so excited! I can’t wait!

I look forward to programs like they have at Discovery Green… but more farm fresh, local food and food trucks. Community ought to participate with gardens, fruit trees and herbs like at Mandell Park. We need it to feel like home and not a tourist trap or vagrant camp.

Possibly. what fun! At that point, I’m ready to
start the actual process of writing and the first thing I’ll tackle is the ending.
One of the centerpieces of the area’s attempted comeback is
Porto’s Bakery at the old Thrifty site located at 3606 and 3614 West Magnolia Boulevard.
They had jobs, families, social lives etc.

Not only the books but the others there with their avid attention and rain sodden coats.
