Free Events of the Weekend: Opera and Walk
Posted on | May 18, 2012 | No Comments
There are two events going on this weekend that can keep you busy. First, Miller Outdoor Theatre will be presenting “The Barber of Seville” from 8pm to 10:30pm tonight and tomorrow.
HGO presents Rossini’s madcap comedy The Barber of Seville featuring artists from HGO Studio as well as the HGO Orchestra and Chorus.
A lecherous old man is no match for young love and sheer audacity, especially when Figaro is involved. Dr. Bartolo is love with Rosina, his young and beautiful charge. But when she falls in love with a “poor student,” (a count in disguise) the stage is set for laugh-out-loud comedy.
Rossini’s score is punctuated with brilliant ensembles and some of opera’s most familiar arias, including Figaro’s ode to his own fame.
Also at Discovery Green tomorrow, there are a ton of events happening that should provide for some good people watching. There is a Walk for Crohn’s Disease, “Artsploration”, Yoga, and a bunch of other things. You can check out their calendar here: http://www.discoverygreen.com/ebevents/
Post Midtown Update

Just a couple of shots from Post Midtown’s progress. They are now putting brick up and have started framing apartments on the remainder of the block.

We especially love the little courtyard/street area with the bridge across. We’ll keep you posted as more progress is made.
Pappas BBQ Downtown is open again
Posted on | May 17, 2012 | No Comments

It’s been closed awhile for renovations, but the original Pappa’s BBQ is open again in Downtown. We swung by to check it out last night, and were blown away by new building. If you remember the old, dreary, run-down place that existed prior… this place is going to shock you when you walk inside.

Everything is cleaner, nicer looking, and the layout works a lot better than the old one. While the food wasn’t like it used to be (we think they’re still getting the kitchen staff back up to speed), it’s nice to have this BBQ option available Downtown again.
Plus, they have a really nice sign over the entrance now, as well as plenty of parking and a drive thru. Make sure to swing by and check it out for yourselves.

Free Event of the Weekend: Art Car Parade
Posted on | May 11, 2012 | No Comments
It’s that time of year again where Houston’s craziest and coolest art cars parade down Allen Parkway. We recommend heading down on Saturday between Waugh and Bagby to check out the world’s largest art car parade from 1 to 3 pm. It’s going to be packed so get there early. Midtown Meeting tonight about A+E District
Posted on | May 10, 2012 | No Comments
Tonight at 6pm in Central Bank’s large conference room, Midtown will be holding their quarterly night community meeting where they present what each committee is working on. The cool part about tonight is they will be having a presentation on Midtown’s next endeavor, becoming a state recognized “Arts and Entertainment District”. The presentation will occur later in the meeting, but it will probably be a good talk and reason for residents of Midtown to come out and learn more about the next cool thing Midtown is shooting for. You can download the agenda for tonight’s meeting here: http://www.houstonmidtown.com/cmsFiles/Files/MMD%20BOD%20Agenda_5-10-12.pdf

Construction along Bagby continues to move South. They are now between CVS and Farrago’s… and have already started to pour the new road in front of Cyclone Anaya’s.
New Public Art at Rice: Skyspace
Posted on | May 7, 2012 | No Comments

The Chronicle has a cool article about a soon-to-be-open public art installation entitled “Skyspace”. Opening in mid June, Skyspace will have light shows at sunrise and sunset that will nearly change your perception of what’s around you…
Leebron was awed by a recent light-show preview. “At one point in there the sky looked positively green. And I’m pretty sure the sky was not green. It kind of heightens your sensibilities. So when you walk out, your sense of looking at the environment has been altered. It seems more vibrant.
The installation will be open to the general public, and they even plan to hold concerts at the place. For more pictures and information, make sure to check out the article here: http://www.chron.com/life/article/Skyspace-turns-eyes-heavenward-at-Rice-campus-3534747.php
Event of the Weekend: Lemonade Day Houston
Posted on | May 4, 2012 | No Comments
While most of the attention this weekend will be centered around Cinco De Mayo… we wanted to bring attention to a lesser known event that we’ve had a ton of fun with in the past. On Sunday, head out around the city to celebrate “Lemonade Day”.
Lemonade Day-the FREE city wide educational program scheduled for Sunday, May 6th, equips and empowers youth with the real life entrepreneurial skills they need to start, own, and operate their Lemonade business. The program teaches youth to set a goal, save for the future, and donate to a charity of their choice.
We had a lot of fun with this last year. You will be amazed at how many different types of lemonade these kids come up with. Store bought, organic, sugar free, some with soda, etc. Our only recommendation is that you head to the official website to get a map of the locations before you head out. We made the mistake last year of trying to walk to all the stands, but soon discovered they are more spread out than we had planned.

Rise above the Bagby street construction

We wanted to share a quick link to our friend’s at Houston Midtown Rocks. They were able to get into the RISE lofts in Midtown and snap pics above the Bagby Street reconstruction. They plan to get more in the future… but for now you can check out the progress from above: http://houstonmidtownrocks.com/2012/04/27/bagby-street-reconstruction-project-update/
Free Event of the Weekend: East Meets West X
Posted on | April 27, 2012 | No Comments
We’ve been a little occupied this week and admit that we’ve been a little neglectful. That said, we just couldn’t leave you guys hanging for our recommended event of the weekend.
On Saturday at Miller Outdoor, head over to see “East Meets West”…
Experience a mesmerizing evening of East Meets West. Dance of Asian America and Mitsi Dancing School will bring you the latest award-winning choreography from China.
Houston Ballet’s Principal Dancers, Ad Deum Dance Company, Houston Ballroom Company, Revolve Dance Company and High School for the Performing and Visual Arts will bring excitement from the west with romantic ballet, elegant contemporary and modern dance and passionate ballroom dance. Don’t miss this fun evening in the park for the whole family!
It is going to be a nice night, so we expect a pretty decent-sized crowd. The event starts at 8:15pm, but we recommend getting there an hour early to grab a spot on the hill.
